What can I say…I will never understand how anyone could swim in shorts or pants. I am 27 and live in the US, and only swim in stylish bikini or brief types of swimwear, and don’t care much about anyone thinking of me being gay (I am straight by the way and love women way too much). And what’s wrong with being gay anyways? We are living in the 21st century, in which gay peeps are very much accepted, so if anyone chooses to think about someone in speedo as gay, let them think so. I agree with both gents above and (Cal has made a great point about gay peeps wearing boardshorts) think that men should be able to tan all over their body, and not just the upper part. What’s up with those guys who wear boardshorts and then have to pull them up to their waist just so that they can get a tan on their legs? That’s just silly. Forget about stigmas and lets bring the sexy bathing suits to the beaches. That’s what they are for.

Good point about boardshorts preventing you from getting a good tan. I wear boxer shorts and that solves my problem (though I have nothing against speedos).

I agree with Robert. Stigmas while wearing this type of swimsuit should be no longer. Don’t gay men wear boardshorts also? I think so. I have worn the TYR brand brief style at times myself. I’ve even wore this type of swimsuit everyday while working in the south Pacific for the whole summer one year. I’ve hiked, biked, and ran in this type of style. Boardshorts are ok and I have worn them also when the briefs just felt uncomfortable from the tightness. I don’t care to swim in boardshorts.

I guess it all comes down to whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

Its a shame that guys in the USA think wearing speedos means you have to be gay. I think it is stupid that guys feel the need to wear pants in the water. Speedo type swimwear are very acceptable, are sexy on a fit guy and make more sense to be worn at the pool or beach. Stigmas against mens swimwear needs to change!

Indeed, here in Europe things are a little more relaxed when it comes to speedos. Even so, guys form the US can choose boxer shorts if they have an athletic body.
