Ask A Question
Hey,
George here.
Since I’m getting at least 2-3 questions a day about style from guys all around the world, I don’t want all that knowledge to go down the drain. This page is a style entry-point for all your questions, answered one by one.
I’ve learned to match colors better and the use of accessories to bring a little more style to plain outfits.

If you have any question at all related to style, post a comment here and I’ll give you a straight-to-the point answer.
Why should you listen to me?
Ever since 2009 I’ve been actively involved in changing the personal image of guys around the world. I’ve…
- done hundreds of consultations by e-mail, phone and face-to-face
- read all the books on men’s style and fashion
- been involved in deep discussions with other image consultants
I tried dozens of clothing combinations and haircuts, I tested lots of men’s products and found my own style. I helped other men find their own style and I think I can help you as well.
People I haven’t seen in years have been pleasantly surprised by the way I dress.

I understand if you’re a bit skeptical about what style can do for you. I also understand that you might be a little afraid to make a fool of yourself if you try some stylish clothes.
This is why I’m giving you my full support. I want you to see the initial results of style… after you can judge for yourself if this is for you or not.

Can you talk about layering and give some examples. Since the winter season is coming up?
Hi Adale,
Sure. In fact I should make a whole article about this but, since this is the Q&A section… I’ll keep it short.
“Layering” is basically wearing several layers of clothes. You wear them one on top pf the other, that’s why they’re called layers.
Layering works in colder periods of year, because the extra layers will keep you warm. In fact, two thin layers of clothes can keep you warmer than one single layer of a thicker cloth.
Layering should be done in casual situations. Here’re some of it’s “ingredients”:
- a V-neck shirt
- a cardigan
- a vest
- a t-shirt
- a scarf
- a shirt
- a sports jacket or blazer
etc.
There’s one rule that needs to be followed here: thinner layers go at the bottom. Shirts and t-shirts are often the innermost layer while blazers and cardigans are at the top.
Here’s a basic example of layering, composed of a t-shirt, a sports jacket and a scarf:
Hi George,
right now I’m thinking about buying some stylish clothes for winter. During summer/autumn I have success with shirts (like those http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/shirts/are-mens-military-shirts-stylish) or combination of a t-shirt and a vest. It works perfectly for me, especially concerning ladies. What would you recommend for colder weather? Do you have some advice for sweathers or something?
Jan,
I haven’t seen how your shirts look like but if you have some dress shirts, you can wear them with a V-neck sweater or a vest. This will keep you warm and you’ll do layering and be even more stylish.
Another thing for colder weather that I like to wear is a scarf.
hi, im 5ft 6inches with an ectomorph body type, but athletic as i visit the gym. i look red indian, with light oilish coloured skin and black straight hair, which i keep well trimmed and neat always.
could you help me on advising what kind of clothes and style would suit me most, with my long hair and red indian (werewolves from twilight movie) looks. My friends say i look like the werewolf guys from the Twilight film. i like looking neat and sharp, but ensuring that my clothes fit me well. so are there anything you can add to it? i really love wearing denim bottoms.
PS: YOU ARE HELPING MORE AND MORE OF US COME OUT FROM THE DARK AND INTO THE LIGHT WITH YOUR EVER HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY TIPS. I WISH I HAD CAME ACROSS YOUR SITE SOONER!!! THANKYOU SOOOOOOO MUCH…
Hey Donnie,
First of all, thanks for all the kind words!
Second, the thing you want to do is wear vertical stripes to make yourself look taller. Think striped shirts, slim ties (if that’s your style) or scarves.
If you have a light skin complexion, try wearing darker colors to make a contrast.
If you already know how to make your clothes fit you, the next steps for you are:
- to wear more color and color-match your outfit
- to wear accessories (plenty of choices here, depends on what you like).
Hello,
In “3 Simple Men Casual Outfits”, you recommend red sneakers. Quick question: What color is the belt? Do you follow the guideline “match belt to shoes”?
Hi Dave,
In casual situations you don’t need to keep follow this rule. It’s a good idea if the outfit is very simple because it helps make a fashion statement.
For red sneakers you have plenty of options. What’s important is that the entire outfit looks good.
In the outfit with the red sneakers, here’s what I would choose for a belt:
1. no belt at all (to keep the focus on the sneakers)
2. a red belt (exactly the same nuance as the sneakers)
3. A belt with white and red stripes on it (because the sneakers also have white)
4. A belt that’s the same color as either the t-shirt or the jeans, again, to let it blend in and keep the focus on the sneakers.

can you plz tell me which hairstyle will look good on me.
Hey Fawaz,

hi george,
first of all thanx… its been great reading all your articles… been incredibly helpful
i’ve got a wedding to attend next month and have decided to wear a gray striped suit with me but am confused about which shirt and tie to team it up with. a plain white shirt with a pink tie seems good but more business-like. could you suggest something else?
i’m 5ft 9in, am thin with normal complexion
Hi Avnesh and thanks for reading all the articles!
I’m not really clear, are you saying you WANT something more business-like than a white shirt/pink tie or that this combination IS to business-like?
Since the tie IS pink I’ll assume you want something less playful.
In fact, let me give you a few possible combinations, ranking them from serious to playful, top to bottom. This way you can choose whichever you want or maybe you’ll come up with even better ideas.
So, a gray suit with…
1. A white shirt and a black uni tie (uni = no pattern)
2. A white shirt and a tie with pattern that contains black, gray and white.
3. Cream shirt with black tie.
4. White shirt with a pink tie.
5. Royal blue shirt with yellow tie
Since the suit is striped, you have to be careful if you choose a striped shirt and a tie with pattern.. Too many stripes.
Maybe you can post a pic of your suit or a link to a similar suit on the Internet? The shade of gray is also very important.
hey george…
i’ve been looking for a black shoe which i can wear with both formal and casual outfits, and these three are the ones i found good
http://i56.tinypic.com/dbgytf.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/24mcms7.jpg
http://i54.tinypic.com/2yphwlt.jpg
now i’m having a problem selecting one of these… the second one looks stylish… the third is comfortable… the first has both but as it is a slip-on i’m not sure if it’ll be fine with formals
which one to go for?
theres a bit confusion for what to wear for an interview…my questions are:
1)will wearing a full sleeve shirt,a formal pant and a tie will do??
2)how to choose a tie?
I would go for the 3rd one. The first two I would wear in the club on a night out. The 3rd one works in both situations.
1) yes, just don’t forget the blazer or jacket.
2) Go for something in netural colors, nothing that stands out too much.
can i wear casual look of cardigan/jumper with tshirt and jeans combo with boots and not sports / casual shoes. will the boots give a casual vibe???????
http://www.whosdatedwho.com/tpx_2873/david-beckham/styles_2
can you please tell me as to what kind of jacket is beckham wearing in first pic. Is it seude leather or which leather? classier or what?
HI George,
I read the articles but here are some Questions which i would like to know for my dad of age 40
what to wear with Pink LOUIS PHILLIPE shirt?
what to wear with White And BLue VAN HEUSEN Shirt?
what to wear with Navy BLue Shirt?
Hey George,
I really like your e-books, but I have a question regarding the ‘no more than 3 colors’ rule: Does it apply to shades as well?
Say that I’m wearing dark blue jeans and a light blue scarf does that count as 2 colors. That would leave only one color left for me, correct?
Or can you wear 2 shades of a single color with 2 other colors?
If it’s winter, boots are great. Try desert boots.
Hi Amir,
It’s definitely not suede. This is actually more formal than regular leather, so it takes the outfit more towards casual. The description says it’s leather but I wouldn’t’ wear this jacket over a suit, blazer or sports jacket.
Brands are less important in this case so let’s focus on the color aspect.
If your dad is 40, the pink is probably the furthest he wants to go with color matching. I would pair it with some black dress pants and a tie that has some combination of black, blue and small amounts of pink on it.
The white and blue shirt.. have him try it with a pair or black or navy blue pants and a tie that has a combination of black, white and blue on it (not necessarily all 3 colors at once).
The navy blue shirt: black pants, white and blue tie for instance. He can also go for a tie that has red and blue on it.
Thanks Robert.
Shades should count as one color. Otherwise, like you noticed, you’re left with only one color.
Of course, this doesn’t mean you can wear 3 bold colors, that will over do it (say red, green and yellow – yuck!).
But if you have dark blue jeans and a light blue scarf, then you can wear a brown t-shirt, white sneakers and a white canvas belt. We have blue, brown and white, that’s 3 colors (if we count white to be a color too – since it’s actually a “non-color”).
Hope that helps.
Hey George,
Could you give me some advices about hair removal?
I was thinking about depilatory creams, but I wanted to know how the effect really is. Would the hair grow thicker?
Hi i want to buy good looking fancy type Blzer / suite for my marriage reception function. Please suggest where can i get this in bangalore city.
You can give information to my mobile also 9845646600
I find cool grey slacks really hard to match with. Unless I’m wearing a solid black shirt (in which case obviously I’d wear black shoes/belt) I sometimes have a hard time deciding how to wear them. How do you match cool grey slacks? Say I was wearing a pink shirt with them? Or navy? What color shoes/belt would I wear?
Hey, I have a question regarding matching your shoes with your belt. How are you supposed to match them if you wear for example blue oder white shoes? Do you wear a Belt with that color?
Great site, keep it up.
Hi Ben,
What I’ve been using for a few years to remove chest hair and hair on my legs is a trimming machine. It does the job pretty good, it doesn’t involve any pain and it leaves a little hair, which I like.
I’ve never used any creams but, as men, I don’t really think we need them. My last two GFs said they didn’t like guys who shaved their legs and it took me a while to convince them that I was merely trimming.
Hi.
Unfortunately I’ve never been to India so I can’t recommend any good places to buy suits. If you have the time find a good tailor and get yourself a nice bespoke suit.
Black shoes and belt is the safest way in most cases but if you’re wearing a gray shirt, you can go for brown shoes and belt. This would make things much more interesting.
Of course, You’d want to wear those brown shoes more often, with blue pants or blue jeans for instance.
Up to you, the easiest way would be to go with black shoes/belt and variate with the shirt, but a pair of brown shoes will definitely make you stand out in a good way since most men don’t wear them.
Well, if you’re wearing a suit, and you decided to go for white shoes, then yes, you should wear a white belt. I’m guessing the suit is also white in this case.
For blue shoes… are you talking about navy blue? Most shoes are either black or brown, while blue is considered more… exotic. yes, you should match them with a belt of the same color.
But if by shoes you men converse shoes or boat shoes, then, in that case you’re talking casual outfits, in that case, do you don’t have to do any matching.
Formal attire: you MUST match shoes with belt
Casual attire: it’s OPTIONAL to match belt with shoes.
@George
Thanks for the quick answer!
I was talking about casual outfits.
Ben:
I’m buying a rose gold dress watch. Trying to decide whether to get a black or brown leather strap. Suggestions?
Both black and brown will go well with rose brown.
Now it depends on the rest of your outfits. Think of the coolest outfit you’re planning to wear your watch with. Maybe it’s that cool new suit.. or that sports jacket.
If you’re wearing other golden accessories, I’d go for the brown strap. For instance you could wear your brown leather strap on your left hand, a brown leather bracelet on your right hand.
But let’s say you’re wearing a cool men’s ring. In this case a black or silver strap would work better.
The rule is: match gold with yellow and silver with black.
If you’re not going to wear any other accessories, you should just worry about matching your watch with your clothes. How you do that is up to you, there are plenty of ways and you need a trained eye for this (not that hard if you’re serious about your style and read all the articles on this blog).
Ideally, of course, I’d buy both straps and get a watch that allows me to swap them as I please.
Good luck!
I have sear hair i want to have stylish hair
Could you link to a picture of yourself?
Hey George,
I just bought brown brouge shoes. What do you recommend to wear with them for a casual outfit?
Great choice, Al!
You can your new brogue shoes with anything, from suits to jeans. I wouldn’t wear them with shorts, even as stylish as those from Ralph Lauren, though.
A pair of simple blue jeans will work very well with brown brogues. You can finish the outfit with either a dress shirt or a polo shirt.
If you’re wondering what suit colors go well with your shoes, the answer is blue and gray. Just make sure you get a matching brown belt.
Swimwear! I’m dyin here. I’m 5’6” 145 with actually a rockin bod, but I look silly in any swimwear I find other than a bikini. Where are the shorter slimmer boardshort suits or the like?
Hey DZ,
How about a boxer swimsuit?
Hi,
A few quick questions. I’m trying to reinvent myself after a relationship and would like some tips. I’m going for more of the PUA peacocky style (no fuzzy purple vests or top hats), but was really impressed by you recent article on peacocking. I’ve linked my Facebook, take a look at my pictures and let me know what you think. I’m really digging the guy’s look with the white belt and white glasses from the peacocking article).
P.S. My hair is very thick so I keep it shaved/faded with a nice crisp edge up. Is there anything else I can do or should I stick with this? How do you style thick, coarse hair?
…that is, what you think I could do differently from my pictures.
Hi Estevan,
I took a look at your photos. I must say in some of them you look pretty cool.
One thing you could do is start wearing patterns (on both casual and formal outfits). They’ll bring a little more flavor.
Another tip I can give you is to go for lighter colors (especially since you like peacocking and you’re not afraid to stand out). try, for instance, a pair of light-colored khakis.
Also, have you thought about a sports jacket?
About the hair: I have the same type of hair and have used L’Oreal Liss Ultime shampoo to soften it. It doesn’t do wonders but it softens it a little.
Also, consider using a hair plate.
Thanks for the feedback!
…what’s a hair plate?
Be careful with it as it can ruin your hair, long term or short term if you misuse it.
Hi George,
I am 30, light complextion, green eyes and light brown hair. What could be some great colour combinations that would give that wow effect?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Hi George,
I am 23, north Indian, complexion wheatish, Height 5’7″, Physique Normal.
Please suggest me some trendy summer combinations for me. As in India Summer season is on and i am a bit confused regarding what to wear in this season. Your reply will definitely help me allot.
Looking forward to hear some good content from your end.
How can i stand out at school?
My school uniform is: Khaki or Navy blue pants or shorts, whit, navy blue or green plain polo, white undershirt, shirt must be tucked in, can wear green or navy blue crew sweatshirt or fleece, have to have belt
i have mayday coming up. This is a very special event for my 8th grade where we go to mass with the moms and then out for lunch. I was thinking of wearing a gray suit with white pinstripes, a white button up under, a patterned orange tie with a plain orange pocket square, and black shoes with black belt. does this go together well? do you have any improvements?
Hey,
This is a question about your recent report you sent to me. The report was entitled Destroy the Geek.
I was reading your report, and agree with most of it. (Especially the hair, fit, glasses, etc.)
But as I read the report, I noticed a slight ambiguity in your writing. Look at Step 4 on page 9. If you look at the bottom paragraphs on that page, there is wording which is ambiguous. It says “But seriously, always go for shoes that have a pointy toecap and a slim sole.”
Revise that above sentence, and take a closer look at the words “slim sole.” For me, I am confused by those words. What do you mean by “slim sole”? Does “slim sole” mean that the width of the shoe is narrow? Or, alternatively, does “slim sole” mean that the sole of the shoe is thin, so your feet are close to the ground?
Also, I want to ask another question. In one of your articles, entitled “The Definitive Style Guide For Short Men,” you have recommended shoe styles for short men. You said that shoes which have “thicker soles” are better for short men, because thick soles lifts them up.
But I disagree with that statement. To my knowledge, thick soled shoes do not look good on men. In my mind, thick-soled shoes appear somewhat feminine, just like how I see platform shoes as feminine. Won’t thick soled shoes look bad on men? To me, whenever I imagine a man wearing thick soled shoes, I automatically associate him as effeminate.
But for a short man, thick soled shoes might work under certain situations. So I am not eliminating the possibility that thicker soled shoes would work for some men. I am open-minded in men’s style.
Hi, I have a problem: I’m balding. What do you suggest in order to look good and stylish? I’m a latino guy in a very good shape, but I’m 5’6” and have a round face.
thanks for the advise.
Wear an accessory that has the same green that your eyes have. Maybe a tie, a bow-tie. You can also wear a t-shirt that has some picture on it with green, or a striped shirt with green stripes.
Brown shoes and a brown sports jacket will also work great on you. Let me know how this goes.
Hi Kumar,
Try some boat shoes, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, rolled-up long sleeved shirts.
Hey George,
I’ve got three questions for ya. First of all, I’m a young(20) man with blue eyes, a light skin complexion, and dark blond hair. I have been trying to find more color combinations that work with my complexion, because so far I have just relied on blue and black, since I know they work for me and I don’t know where to start looking for any other combinations that will look good on me. Any suggestions?
Second, my hair has been the one aspect of my style that has never been quite ‘up to par’ with the rest of me. I have always been a little lost with my hair for a multitude of reasons. I have a somewhat half-square-half-heart shaped face, and a large forehead. The biggest trouble for me becomes that I get trapped between keeping my hair long enough to cover my forehead, and keeping it short enough that it doesn’t get disheveled by wind, since it is so thin. Any ideas?(sorry if that was vague)
And finally, I was tipped off to espadrilles by one of your articles and looked them up, and I’m in love. I found a pair that sparked my interest, especially color-wise, and I would like your input on them.
Link: http://www.espadrillestore.com/traditional-espadrilles-red/
I already have black, blue, and other dark colored shoes, so I figured I could use a pair of red espadrilles or other bright color with dark laces to create some nice contrast and maybe to wear with a pair of dark jeans. Input?
Thank you so much, sorry to ask so many questions haha.
PS: Your website has been an INCREDIBLE help to me. Your style tips have worked WONDERS for me, I find that this is a great place to find ideas for new outfits, to improve old ones, or just to gain inspirations for new clothing styles that I otherwise wouldn’t have the confidence to try. Thanks.
Please i want to know if a black suit can be worn with a pink shirt and a purple tie
i think it is fashionable cos i want to were it during my wedding anniversary
Can you please do an article about men bags ??? I would deeply appreciate it, because I really need to buy myself a bag where i will keep my wallet, keys, mobile etc. Please help !
hi george,
I am in eigth grade and being so i dont dress up as much or get the oppurtunity to do so as much. I have been doing it more since your blog but a lot of times i find myself in just t sirt and gym shorts and tennis shoes. Could you do an article on this type of clothing and how to look good everyday even when not dressed up
Hi George,
I am 16, medium complexion, black eyes and black hair. Height 5’5.What could be some great colour combinations that would give that wow effect for formal wear? even now i cant find whats suitable for me..
Look forward to hearing from you.
Hi Connor,
Firstly, apologies for the late reply.
You can pair khaki pants with dark brown. War dark brown shoes, a brown belt and a dark blue shirt or polo. You can try green if you want – just make sure it’s dark green or olive green.
Sorry for not answering this on time. You coudl make sure either the tie has some white on it to match the shirt and the pinstripe pattern.
Also, the pocket square should be white. It’s a style rule: when wearing a suit with a solid white shirt, the pocket square must be solid white as well.
Hi James,
Sorry for the ambiguity. The sole of the shoe should be thin (not the width of the shoe).
Regarding your second question about shoes with thick soles:
Those types of shoes can maie you look even 4-5 inches taller, which is quite a difference. The shoe companies have managed to camouflage the sole’s thickness.
Take a look at the picture below:
I never wore such shoes but they look like they’re worth a try. If I’ll ever see a pair in one of the shoe stores I frequent, I’ll make sure to try them on and see how they feel.
I’m glad to hear you’re open minded about men’s style, that’s what BeStylish.org is all about!
Hi Miguel,
Try to keep your hair trimmed as much as possible so you don’t draw attention to it. An even better solution is to shave your head.
Once you do that, go ahead and wear some stylish caps and hats such as an ascot cap…
… or a fedora…
… or a panama hat…
hey there,

hey george,
great work. really appreciate you taking time and helping us guys out
i am slightly knock-kneed, my wardrobe is full of cargo trousers and loose-fit jeans because of that.
i’d like to add something different to what i already wear but get a feeling it’ll look odd (as i’m not too well built either) if i choose slim fit trousers/jeans. is that right or should i go ahead and wear these?
Hey Goeorge.
from a total suit rookie, can you tell me if my planned suit for an upcoming ball will work?
i have a royal blue shirt with a black tie and royal blue pocket square – is this normally done?
also, i have a really nice black pinstripe jacket but black solid pants – is this suitable to wear?
thanks a tonne
Thanks, Dave.
Chukka boots are casual in essence, so, while you can wear them with dress shirts, please don’t wear them at formal events. When attending weddings, formal dinners, etc. go for a pair of formal boots.
Hi Glenn,
I did hear a while back about a style icon doing this. But I don’t remember who he was, nor can I find pictures.
It’s a bold move so this might not be for everyone. But you can try it if you want. A guy named Jack Taylor (from the crew of the TV show “Beverly Hills”) would wear his ties like scarves. I guess you can get creative when it comes to slim ties, but be prepared for criticism.
I wouldn’t wear it unless I wore a coat. That way, whether the shirt is tucked or not won’t really matter. Plus, most of the tie will be hidden anyway behind the coat.
I wouldn’t wear a tie and a scarf at the same time to make a fashion statement.
Hi Alfie,
Congrats for starting jogging – I do it ALL the time and it’s really healthy!
Regarding the shorts versus jogging pants issues, it all depends to the temperature outside and your thermal comfort. You can wear either one as long as you’re not too hot or too cold in them.
As far as colors are concerned, you can go for a white and blue or a white and red combination. This way you’ll stand out more. Or, you can go for a full-white outfit. However, when you’re jogging in the winter, make sure you don’t wear too much white, though; lighter colors in the spring/summer, darker colors in the autumn/winter.
Hi Jay,
I’m glad you’re enjoying my site.
If you have darker skin, go for lighter colors, such as white, light blue and pale colors (pale yellow, pale pink etc.).
To find pants that fit you, get larger pants, then take them to the tailor to have them adjusted. Make sure all the clothes you wear will fit just right, not too tight yet not too lose either.
I don’t know about your hair type but would this work for you?
If your hair is thick, probably not, but it’s worth going to a stylist to get some fresh haircut ideas.
I would bring someone with me when I shop and I would avoid red and orange.. Brown and blue are important colors, though, so you shouldn’t avoid them.
Hi Joel,
Yes, royal blue and black go well together:
Regarding the pocket square: royal blue is ok but you can go even further. A black and blue pocket square, for instance.
There are plenty of other things you can do, such as add a little bit of white to the pocket square. Maybe royal blue with white dots?
Hi Yuri,
I wouldn’t recommend online stored because the clothes you order might not fit you. I have a friend who recently bought some sneakers online and, even though he tried the exact same model in stores, the ones he received were a little too big.
I would only buy accessories online, the rest of the clothes… I only buy exactly the clothing items that I’m trying on.
Colors.. read around the site, see what I recommend… Also, read about color matching and the types of clothing items that are considered stylish (boat shoes, moccasins, rolled-up shirts chinos etc.)
About your last part,
I’m not really a self-develop coach but I did notice you keep your head and neck too low.
Hi,
It’s simple: go for lighter colors> pale yellow, pale pink, white, light-blue etc.
Hi Yash,
Thank you for the kind words.
Don’t worry too much about looking odd in slim-fit. I think you’re just too much used to larger clothes. Trust, me you’ll look all right. And you don’t have to get pants that are TOO tight, somewhere between slim-fit and regular fit will do.
Also, have you though about wearing chino pants as an alternative to jeans?
Hi, first off I just wanted to say I LOVE your site. Lots of helpful info..
Few questions..
1) It seems to me that matching shoes with a shirt or belt looks really good for casual situations like school.. my only problem is that this would require me to buy 5+ pairs of shoes.. which is obviously expensive. Is it really important to match the shoes? If I don’t match the shoes with my outfit, what color shoes should I buy in order to work universally for multiple outfits. Also, what should I use to help color match in-place of the non-matching shoes?
2) I have these REALLY nice casual sneakers, they have a combination of shiny black and non-shiny black, and work well for parties and casual situations. Would it look good if I wore a white dress shirt, a shiny lightly patterned shiny black tie, really deep/dark blue slim (not skinny)jeans, and a leather black belt along with these shoes. What are some other combinations I can do? I have this awesome slightly shiny (because it’s not 100% cotton) grey shirt similar but even better than this
http://0.tqn.com/d/teenfashion/1/0/Q/1/-/-/grey142.16._SCLZZZZZZZ_SS384_V38223169_.jpg
What are some good combo’s I can do with this?
Oh, I’m 5’7″ Indian with medium brown skin, not really dark or light. And I live in California so weather is generally not a concern
Thanks!
@Nishanth
I should also add I’m fairly skinny.. waist size 26.5 :/ I’m working on it though haha
Also if it helps, I have a sick shiny white/silver-ish tie with a nice light pattern but can’t find ANY uses for this
Hey, I love the style of clothing that Henleys Deluxe sells, (http://www.henleys.co.uk/) but I’m from America and Henleys is an English company that doesn’t ship to the United States. Are there any brands that you know of that are similar to Henleys but are available for purchase in the states? thank you so much!
I recently purchased a light grey suit which I will be wearing for an afternoon wedding in about two weeks (along with black shoes). My question is as follows: I would like to wear an orange shirt along with it, but I am not sure if I should go with a darker or lighter shade. I’m thinking lighter being that the suit itself is of a lighter shade of grey? Also what color tie would I wear to compliment it? Main color orange with grey accents or vice-versa? Thanks for your help!
Hi Nishanth,
First of all, thanks!
1) You can just match the shoes with your belt. Since this is a school uniform, I take it that you need to wear leather shoes. Just go for either black or brown. Brown is great by the way.
TO color match them, just stick to matching them with your belt. No need to match them with your shirts.
2) Shiny is not all that stylish, you’re better off without the shiny tie. But it’s not that bad either if you keep the shoes.
Also, black and navy blue don’t really work together. Yes, most people won’t notice but you’re better off with black pants. Now, what I would do is add something extra to such an outfit. Perhaps you could get a red tie instead of the shiny black one?
Also, you could get a black vest and add a pocket square to it (make sure the vest allows for one).
If the tie is not that shiny as you say, you can keep it, though – it’s not that big of a problem.
I’m not sure about the pic: is the shirt the one that you have or you have the tie as well?
Can you post a picture so I can have a look?
I wish I could help but I live in Europe – I’m not familiar with what you may find there.
Hi Jason,
I hope my answer finds you in time.
First off, I would wear brown shoes and belt with a grey suit. It’s not wrong to go for black but brown is more stylish. You can stick with black if you already purchased your shoes, though.
Yes, orange will look good, a darker shade that is. You need to make a good contrast with your light-gray suit.
The tie can repeat the color from the shirt, the suit, both or it can have completely different colors.
really love your article, its makes a lot of sense to me. but my problem is how to combine neckties with my canvas.wearing complementary colors looks so odd sometimes like a blue shirt on a red tie.i just want to know the basic colors of neckties that goes with canvasses. thanks
To tuck or not to tuck? this is the problem!
Hi George!
First of all I should say you are amazing! I just found you by googling and you’ve helped me a lot already.
My question is on which occasions and styles it’s better to tuck in my shirt and on which it’s not.
I’m 5’7″ (not too tall) and average body. I normally feel better when I tuck in my shirt as i feel I look taller (i’m not sure it’s actually true though)but at the same time I don’t want to look nerdy (I wear glasses too)and/or out of style.
I appreciate your comment on that.
I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you mean by a canvas. As far as colors are concerned, you should get your eye trained for the best color combinations. Red and blue isn’t all that great, there are better ones out there. try orange and black, orange and gray, red and gray, blue and orange, dark orange and dark green and so on.
Hi Kevin,
I’m really glad this blog is helping you. Lucky I was online when your question popped on my screen.
Shirt tucking is more stylish than not tucking so feel free to do it. I always do it.
I do wear some shirts untucked sometimes, but only when I get a feel that it will look good.
Hello George, I’m attending a republican party dinner I will be with Girlfriend and county legislators and a Senator, I’m a working stiff I want to look damn good help brother what color jacket pants shirt tie I have small buidget is there hope using those online stores or can Macy’s or JC Penny pull it off for me.
So I was looking at these shoes:
http://www.chromebagsstore.com/shoes/kursk.html?c=190
I really like them, but would it be a faux pas to get them in red? I think they look nice in red, but I’m not sure how I would pull off scarlet red shoes. Do you have any suggestions as to how to go about wearing red shoes, if at all?
Hi George!
Could you write an article about how to wear glasses (medical)? I mean color and matching, style, brand, etc. For some people like me they’re a mandatory part of our outfit and I want them to be advantageous not the other way around!
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Hi Mike,
This sounds like an important event for you. Instead of answering your question and just tell you to go for a *black tie* attire, I decided to write an entire article about it. You can find it here – I go really in depth about black tie:
http://www.bestylish.org/blog/index.php/formal-wear/the-black-tie-dress-code-for-men
About the budget – this is all about you putting time and effort to find the best prices. Just make sure you get the highest quality – try to stay away from polyester if you can. The more you search for each of the individual pieces of the black tie, the higher the chances that you’ll find some amazing deals.
Hi George!
I’m looking for soem additions to my wardrobe and wondered if you could advise me in a direction to go? I think I’ve got way too much casual but you advice would be appreciated.
I made you a little video to showcase everything I own.

What do you think?
Much appreciated
Hello George!
I’ve read your article about the different kinds of shoes, but I was surprised that Skate Shoes were gone from that article, because skate shoes are worn by many people especially to generate the “bad boy” avatar. (not for skateboarding at all).
I wanted to know what’s your opinion about this kind of shoes, because I thought seriously about buying a pair , something like this
http://www.simplysneakers.com/wp-content/gallery/nike-sb-dunks-release-dates/nike-sb-dunk-release-date-6.jpg
There is a huge variety of skate shoes (you can google pictures and see).
I like to wear sport shoes for casual outfits, but I want some semi-formal shoes and thought that skate shoes would look good, or in your opinion I better get a pair of sneakers ??
Sorry for the long message!
Thanks !!
@Oren
I forgot to say that I’m talking about combining it with jeans !
Hi George.
As I’m finishing High School this season the Prom Night is getting closer rapidly.
For nearly 2 years i’ve been hitting on the same girl, with no luck. However i eventually asked her to be my date for prom night, and in the end i had a not to convincing yes.
So the time has come. I want to prove to her that she took the right decision when she accepted my offer. And in the end i want to lay her the fuck down once and for all.
I got the car set and i got the suit set. What i would like from you is a few tips and tricks on how to impress her silky underwear off.
A few details about me and the suit.
Tall dark browned guy with normal skin color, however i will return from holiday in a few weeks with a slightly better tan.
The suit: Navy blue Giorgio Armani, Slim suit. 2 Buttoned
What would be the best to compliment me and the suit, and should i choose bow tie or regular tie?
Looking forward to hear from you!
Kind regards
Peter Tuborgh
hi im 5ft 7inches tall with a brown skin tone i hav a endomorphic body… can u suggest me some outfits which suits me… il b pleased if u suggest me the color also….
Hello,
I have a question that I want to ask you. What do you think if I wear a black vest with matching pants, a white shirt and a gray/black striped/shiny tie for my prom?
Any advices?
I would definetly wear a suit for prom. And if you are very fancy, go with a colorful tie that matches the dress of your date. Or go with Black suit, white shirt, and Slim shiny black tie. Looks very classy and original. However i wouldn’t suggest if you are very very light skin color. But your suggestion is not bad and i have no clue what so ever about the “dresscode” at your prom. But wearing a Suit always makes you look sexy, and if you are very smart get one that matches your figure, nothing gets you more laid than a suit where your body shape is visible.@Style-less guy
I just purchased a pair of Grenson’s Dylan Tan Calf shoes. Honestly, I’m not sure what sorts of rules I should follow with pants color with these things. What shades of gray? Is charcoal out of the question? Jeans? Khakis? Let me know! Thanks
What would you say you should wear to a sports game?
Hey, great blog. I recently bought a checked, green (and white) shirt. Not dark, nor bright, just pure green, really nice everyday thing with buttoned-down collar. But I’m having trouble finding the right tie for it.
I would love combining it with an exciting tie. I think pictures from Gant or Tommy Hilfiger often combines green with for instance dark red and blue with great success; however my “preppy” dark red and blue striped tie somehow won’t go with this shirt. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot, Olav, Norway
@Peter Tuborgh
DO you think it would be better to wear a tux or a suit to the prom? Thanks
George, my husband has to wear suits or jackets and slacks at the school where he teaches. He has a black dress shirt with a black, white, and silver diamond patterned tie. I have found a lot of sites recommending either khaki pants or gray pants, but no one says anything about what color jacket to wear. What do you recommend?
What is your take on a quilted tweed jacket(well fitted of course) for winter as opposed to a pea coat?
@Style-less Guy Yes mate, i definetly think you would achieve better wearing a tux or a suit for prom.
Okay I’ll go straight to the chase !! I have a small budget, Up too 250 Dollars, & I wanted to know what the best clothes to buy, knowing that I am in a country ( Ukraine ) that is snowing until later Fabruary & really cold !! really I would apreciate your advice !!
I have a question about top sizes. I’m a 36.5 inch chest and typically a large is 44-46 and xlarge is 48-50.
The problem I find is that the large is a tad too tight and the xlarge is too loose.
My shape is not going to change much but I was wondering what tips or advice you can give to make sure I get a good fit?
sir,
i am a average fat boy with little dark complexity.
so suggest me which colour will suite on me and which type of cloth i should wear.

Hi, i wanted to get your opinion on the shiny down jackets (like the ones made by montcler) for winter. Would they be considered fashionable? Or too “extra” and overdoing it on the getting noticed aspect?
Look forward to hearing from you
Jay

Hello,
Could you do an entry on different ways to fold/wear a pocket square? Seems like it ranges quite a bit from just being stuffed in the pocket to the straight edged fold you see on Mad Men. It’d be cool to see a bunch of different ideas and applications. Thanks.
